Jennifer Williams              Resume              Press Release: 2016

    Artist's Statement

Jennifer WilliamsAs an environmental landscape painter, my work continues to explore the relationship between the land and the water. It is constantly changing. As Heraclitus wrote, you cannot step into the same river twice.  Likewise, the many shapes of water have provided me with endless inspiration. I strive to capture those meditative qualities that water has in its power to touch one’s soul.  We take care of what we love. Through my art, I hope to help people deepen their ecological respect for and spiritual relationship with their watershed.

My paintings emerge through a process of acrylic layered over mixed media on wood panels. The collaged surface materials consist of recycled maps, text, paper grocery bags, cedar bark, and gold flake. Alternating processes of building up the surface and breaking the surface down creates a lush base from which the composition evolves. The detailed surface reveals fragments of words and traces of maps that invite a deeper exploration of meaning.
